Vélez’s performances actively explore the possibilities of working in collaboration with different groups (artists and handcrafters, special communities, athletes, musicians, and groups conformed especially for each project), in different places and cultures. The artistic projects are conceived from what he calls “the ability to create aesthetics” of, for, and with these groups, according to their different lifestyles, thereby managing different concepts and expressions of popular culture, power, and ethics. The human relations on which Vélez constructs his creative processes are as important as the final outcome, be that a performance, a film, an installation, or a photographic memoir.

Vélez calls his practice “Aesthetics of Collaboration.” In his work, as described by curator Gerardo Mosquera, “the community should be an active agent” at the same time as his art also “interweaves personal memories, dreams, visions, and the determination of pretending to invent new worlds.” The artist works with diverse media and themes, ranging from the popular to the high-tech, from the traditional to the contemporary.

This bi-lingual English/Spanish book is a thorough documentation of one of Latin America’s premier artists working with participatory performance and collaborative art practices today, with critical essays by Luis Camnitzer and Emelie Chhangur and interviews with the artist by Hans-Michael Herzog and Adrienne Samos.

Los proyectos artísticos de Vélez exploran activamente las posibilidades de trabajar en colaboración con diferentes grupos de personas (artistas y artesanos, comunidades especiales, deportistas, músicos y grupos formados especialmente para cada proyecto) en lugares y con culturas diferentes. Sus performances son concebidas a partir de lo que él llama “la capacidad de crear una estética” de, para y con estos grupos, de acuerdo a sus diferentes estilos de vida. Con ello gestiona conceptos y expresiones diferentes a los de la cultura popular, el poder y la ética. Las relaciones humanas sobre las que Vélez construye sus procesos creativos son tan importantes como el resultado final, ya sea este una performance, película, instalación o una memoria fotográfica.

Vélez llama a su práctica “estética de la colaboración”. En su obra, tal como describe el curador Gerardo Mosquera, “la comunidad debe ser un agente activo” y al mismo tiempo su arte” entrelaza recuerdos personales, sueños, visions y la determinación de pretender inventar nuevos mundos”. El artista trabaja con diversos medios y temas, que van desde lo popular a la alta tecnología y de lo tradicional a lo contemporáneo.

Este libro bilingüe inglés-español es una documentación completa de uno de los principales artistas latinoamericanos que actualmente trabajan en prácticas de performance participativa y arte colaborativo. Contiene ensayos críticos de Luis Camnitzer y Emelie Chhangur y entrevistas de Hans-Michael Herzog y Adrienne Samos con el artista.

Humberto Vélez studied Law and Political Science at the University of Panama and was awarded a scholarship from the Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano to study at the Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV de San Antonio de los Baños in Cuba, founded by Gabriel García Márquez. In the early nineties, he produced social and educational videos for the province of Barcelona.He has been an artist in residence in Vienna (Ministry of Foreign Affairs); London (Triangle Arts Trust-Gasworks); Sheffield (Yorkshire-Artspace), Southend-on-Sea (METAL); Paris (La Cité internationale des Arts); and the Art Gallery of York University (AGYU) in Toronto. In 2000, he presented his first solo exhibition, Instalaciones [Installations], at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo in Panama and in 2011 a major survey of past performance works took place at the AGYU. He has created performances and installations for ciudadMULTIPLEcity, Panama (2003); Victoria Baths, Manchester (2004); Centro de Arte La Regenta, Las Palmas de Gran Canarias (2005); Tate Modern, London (2007); Centre Pompidou, Paris (2010); Välparaíso: in(ter)venciones, Chile (2010); and the AGYU (2011). He has also participated in the biennials Periferic, Romania (2001); Central America (2002, 2004); Havana (2003, 2012); Shanghai (2004); Panama (2002, 2005, 2008); Liverpool (2006); Cuenca (2009); Venice (2011); and Montevideo (2012). His videos have been shown at numerous festivals, such as Sónar, Barcelona (1997) and the Festival Ícaro de Cine Centroaméricano (2003). He works as an artist, art professor, independent filmmaker, art producer, and is co-founder and director of Visiting Minds, an art and education project in Panama.

Humberto Vélez estudió Derecho y Ciencias Políticas en la Universidad de Panamá y fue galardonado con una beca de la Fundación del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano para estudiar en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y TV de San Antonio de los Baños en Cuba, fundada por Gabriel García Márquez. Realizo videos educativos y sociales para la Diputación de Barcelona a principios de los años noventa. Ha sido artista residente en Viena (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores); Londres (Triangle Arts Trust-Gasworks); Sheffield (Yorkshire Artspace); Southend-on-Sea (METAL); París (La Cité internationale des Arts) y la Art Gallery of York University (AGYU) en Toronto. En el año 2000 tuvo su primera gran exposición individual (Instalaciones) en el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Panamá y en 2011 la AGYU presentó una extensa exhibición retrospectiva de su obra.
